When you close your eyes and picture your birth, what do you see? What kind of environment are you in? Who is by your side? Are you laboring in bed? Do you plan to use any medical interventions? Deciding on your birth preferences is one of the most important things that you can do to help prepare for the birth of your child(ren). This will be your voice when you may not be able to say it for yourself.
Get a pencil and paper and even if all you can draw is stick figures, draw an actual picture of your birth. It’s a simple exercise that may have surprising results.
Once you have decided what your ideal birth looks like, talk about it. Do you and your partner share the same vision? What about your care provider? Will they support your wants and needs during your labor? Does the facility where you plan to birth your baby/babies have any rules or procedures that will keep you from having the birth you desire? Will you decide birth at home?
As a Doula, it's my responsibility to make sure that you and your partner are educated about your options. It’s never too early to start thinking about what you want. Don’t know where to start? Contact me. I’m always happy to help my clients create their preferences for birth.
